The laity were simply despised. Of course it had enormous attraction for ordinary believers who were worried about what happened to their parents, their grandparents, people that they loved. The Anglican Reformation strove to retain the historical episcopate and steered a middle course, liturgically and even doctrinally, between Roman Catholicism and continental Protestantism, particularly under Queen Elizabeth I. You and I can rediscover that Gospel today. Why did the Reformation have to happen? In other words, if you were a Christian you would behave in certain ways. Here is one of the first areas I want to look at. During the Protestant Reformation the churchs conflicting tendencies toward both corruption and reform coincided with the highly personal struggle of Martin Luther, who asked an essentially medieval question: How do I obtain a God who is merciful to me? Luther at first attempted a medieval answer to this question by becoming a monk and by subjecting himself to fasting and disciplinebut to no avail. Try to explain to others what it is about the Gospel that is so attractive to us in the full knowledge that it could be attractive to them as well. Thus, Huldrych Zwingli lumped Luthers sacramental teaching together with the medieval one, and Luther in turn exclaimed: Better to hold with the papists than with you! John Calvin was considerably more moderate than Zwingli, but both sacramentally and liturgically he broke with the Roman Catholic tradition. This was compounded, of course, by the offending priests power to absolve his victim of any qualms she (or he) might have about the situation. It is one of these great big old rambling houses built back in the 1890s. When, after repeated warnings, Luther refused such obedience, he was excommunicated by Pope Leo X in 1521. Those Protestants who went on to repudiate orthodox Trinitarianism as part of their Reformation claimed to be carrying out, more consistently than Luther or Calvin or the Anabaptists had done, the full implications of the rejection of Roman Catholicism, which they all had in common. The challenge of the Protestant Reformation became also an occasion for a resurgent Roman Catholicism to clarify and to reaffirm Roman Catholic principles; that endeavour had, in one sense, never been absent from the life and teaching of the church, but it was undertaken now with new force. All this may seem ancient history now. In the late Middle Ages, Christianity tended to become very formal, very external, very outward. This was the world of simony the buying and selling of church offices that faced the Catholic church on the eve of the Reformation. One of the great ideas of the Reformation is to unpack the enormous riches of Scripture and to savor them as we realize just how much it means. In 2005, C. The doctrine that Scripture was not easy to understand emerged in the late medieval church. It is still used in parts of the world today. The external forum was the legal sphere that handled offenses under the jurisdiction of church courts, including papal and episcopal courts and the Inquisition. For years, decades, and maybe centuries, the church as swept sexual misconduct of its priests under the table. The case of disgraced priest Brendan Smyth even contributed to the fall of the Irish government in 1994. Again we find Luther moving this into the forefront of the Reformation struggle. Specifically, the current crisis centers around the abuse of minors, frequently boys; and the exposed practices go well beyond confession.
